solidification  of wastes with  nochaR's polymers

High Technology Engineered Polymers

  • N910 polymer, applied to all organic liquids - Thermoplastic elastomer: styrene block copolymer
  • N960 polymer, applied to all aqueous liquids - 100% cross linked, co-polymer of acrylamide
  • N935 polymer, applied to light alcohols

Thus the choice of the NOCHAR polymer to be used depends on the nature of the effluent to be immobilized, alone or as a mixture.

IMPLEMENTATION

Absorption and solidification of liquid

  • Quick reaction
  • Slow speed mixing
  • Mass ratios "liquid:polymer" vary depending upon the chemical composition of the waste
    • Oil : 1:1 à 3:1
    • TBP : 1:1 à 2:1
    • Mixed sludge types : 2:1 à 4:1
    • Aqueous solutions : 2:1 à 5:1

Minimal volumetric increase in the solidification process: less than 10%

We strongly recommend that each waste stream undergo a bench test, in order to verify the composition of the solution, to determine the best polymer formula for solidification and to determine appropriate and safe solidification ratios, based on liquid : polymer by weight.

ADVANTAGES :

  • Stabilized final waste (no degradation), non-leaching and solid,
  • No heat build up, no heat release in the process;
  • Non toxic and worker friendly products
  • High Resistance to radiation - 2.7 MGray Cobalt 60, gamma source
  • If apart from organic liquids, the liquid contains an aqueous phase, a combination of various polymer materials is used
  • Disposal options:
    • Incineration: Cyclife (France, Sweden) and Belgoprocess (Belgium)
    • Encapsulation in cement
    • Direct disposal into carbon steel drums or high integrated (HIC) liner then into drums

The polymers N910 and N960 were used to allow obtaining a solidified final waste

These organic liquids solidified by NOCHAR products were then cemented and accepted on the ANDRA storage site. They were subject to a specific acceptance procedure.

  • other FIELD OF APPLICATION: removal of organic liquid residues froM solid materials

During the operation of the Cernavoda NPP, a series of waste streams have been generated for waste treatment purposes. One important waste stream is the combination of solid materials and liquid organic waste, creating flammable solids. Flammable solids represent solid materials, such as cloth, plastic, contaminated with oil containg gamma nuclides and H-3 from maintenance activities.

The use of NOCHAR is an effective solution for eliminating the liquid in order to allow the final acceptance  of solid and liquid waste.
